a hunter and gatherer mentality

The visual communication for the 6th edition of the Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture lay in the central theme of re-use. We re-used the overall graphic language of UABB, adding bright blue and orange as the two colors that intervened in and highlighted the urban environment. The new logo was reduced to two letters: RE, signifying and underlining the theme.

inspiration  The theme of the 6th edition of the Urbanism\Architecture Bi-city Biennale in Shenzhen was “re-living the city”. It researched and advocated a new way of urbanism: instead of a grand urban plan, we are in need of a hunter-gatherer mentality.

how it got done  As a symbol for the hunter-gatherer we designed a woven bag and brought it to informal unfinished places in Shenzhen that could be seen as an inspiration to the biennale theme. Photo’s made there of Shenzhen locals carrying the bag are at the center of all further communication. For the scenography, walls of woven type were used to mark the different chapters in the exhibition.

client profile  Urbanism\Architecture Bi-City Biennale is currently the only biennial exhibition in the world to be based exclusively on the set themes of urbanism and urbanisation. UABB is situated in the rapidly developing region of the Pearl River Delta and co-organized by the two neighboring cities of Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The biennale is forward-thinking and focuses on the conceptual issues of urbanism and architecture. With around 770 exhibits and 310 activities since the biennale launched in 2005, UABB has attracted over a million visitors worldwide.
