The expo was co-organized between UNESCO and the Nanjing municipal government, connecting knowledge and strengthening diplomacy between different heritage sites throughout the world.
inspiration The tangram puzzle travelled from China to the west in the 19th century, so we decided to use it as a playful symbol to express China’s connection to the rest of the world.
how it got done We use the tangram in two different ways; firstly as components to recreate iconic buildings and cultural icons, and secondly as a window to frame and draw attention to various textures, landscapes, and cityscapes from Nanjing city. Through this window, we convey the main themes of the expo; openness, creativity and multiculturalism.
client profile The city of Nanjing lies on the south bank of the Yangtze River and is the capital of Jiangsu Province. Known as the capital city of six or ten dynasties in ancient Chinese history, it has a brilliant cultural heritage. This cultural heritage has been the foundation and inspiration for the world historical and cultural city expo. [A world expo is a large international exhibition designed to showcase achievements of nations. These exhibitions vary in character and are held in varying parts of the world. World’s fairs originated in the French tradition of national exhibitions, a tradition that culminated with the French Industrial Exposition in 1844 held in Paris.]
So many delegates attending the event demonstrated the expo has drawn attention from the world, and the Chinese side is attaching more and more importance to cultural heritage protection. – Xu Ning, spokeswoman of the Nanjing municipal government
